Q&A: Brandon Rios
Following a 2013 in which Brandon ‘Bam Bam’ Rios fought twice, which included a razor thin points defeat to Mike Alvarado for the interim WBO Light Welterweight title (the 2nd fight of their trilogy) and a UD loss to P4P Superstar Manny Pacquiao, many Boxing fans were left wondering what now for the former WBA Lightweight Champion? Fast forward to the present, a DQ win against Diego Chaves in a messy fight before Chaves was disqualified for an intentional elbow to the face in Round 9, along with a dominant display back in January, culminating in the doctor stopping Mike Alvarado at the end of 3 one sided rounds for the vacant WBO International Welterweight Title. Many insiders are suggesting Rios will next be seen in June, in a UK ring against ‘The Special One’ Kell Brook for the IBF Welterweight Title. Make no mistake: ‘Bam Bam’ is back!
MP: Hi Brandon! It’s a little over 2 months ago now since you put on that clinical performance in stopping Mike Alvarado! How satisfying was that victory & what’s been happening since?
BR: I am satisfied with the outcome due to winning a title, which helps put me back on the radar. I have been spending time with my kids and waiting for another fight to be scheduled soon.
MP: You’ve had several fights at the Welterweight limit now. Are you comfortable at 147 or would you take big fights down at 140 with the likes Adrien Broner & Danny Garcia should they materialise?
BR: I feel good at 147 and have no interest at 140, big name or no name. 147 is my new weight class and I’m here to stay.
MP: At 147, you’ve been mentioned as a possible opponent for UK star Kell Brook, challenging for his IBF Title in a huge outdoor event in June. Are you up for coming to the UK to tangle with Brook?
BR: Yes I would love to fight Kell Brook! I have answered back through Twitter and accepted the challenge, to come to the UK and as of now I haven’t heard back.
MP: You said directly after your 3rd fight with Alvarado ‘it was my best fight ever’. Do you think you’ll need a similar effort to dethrone Brook?
BR: Brook looked great in his last fight but his opponent was not doing much to what I seen.
MP: On that subject, you threw nearly 300 punches in 3 rounds against Alvarado in your 3rd fight! That’s some intensity! Would you bring the same kind of intensity to a fight with Brook or potentially look for a more cautious approach?
BR: I will bring my intensity but with Brook we don’t know because we don’t yet know what fight style he will bring. Guess we will only know if the fight happens!
MP: Did you manage to catch Brook’s mandatory fight with Jo Jo Dan? What did you make of Brooks performance?
BR: Yes he looked good but as I mentioned earlier I felt Jo Jo didn’t throw a lot of punches in this fight, a mistake that I won’t be making.
MP: Brook and his Promotor Eddie Hearn have been quite vocal about you as a potential opponent for his June defence. With this in mind do you have a message for Kell or anything you’d like to say to him?
BR: Today I went on Twitter and accepted the challenge and I am available, so let’s make this fight happen!
MP: The Welterweight division is hot right now, with the likes of Bradley, Khan, Porter, Thurman, Marquez, Brook along with Mayweather & Pacquiao. Besides potentially fighting Brook, which fight are you most up for?
BR: Any of them will work. I am a fighter and that’s what I do – fight!
TFG: Finally, it’s a huge fight, all the Boxing world has an opinion. What do you think will happen come May 2nd – Mayweather v Pacquiao?
BR: I think Mayweather will win but it also depends on who can keep with their game plan.
MP: Thanks Brandon! Good luck for 2015 and we hope you get the Kell Brook fight! It will be a privilege to witness a fighter with your quality & class on UK shores!
BR: Thank you and hopefully we can get the fight with Sheffield hero Kell Brook! And thanks to all my fans for their loyal support with Team Rios. And thanks Mark for the interview.
